Major

Major Requirements

The major is the field of academic specialization within a degree. It is defined as:

  • A set of required courses, outlined in the curriculum.

  • A minimum of 24 credits within an Associate of Arts degree; a minimum of 30 credits for undergraduate and graduate programs.

  • No more than 50% of the major requirements can be taken outside of Norwich.

  • At least two courses at the 300-400 level with a bachelor’s program.

  • Interdisciplinary majors must include courses from more than one related academic discipline.

 Declaration/Change of Major

A student must meet requirements, as determined by the program administrator, to be accepted into the desired major. Refer to specific academic program requirements.

Removal from a Major

The program administrator has the authority to dismiss a student from a major for academic deficiency or unsatisfactory performance in a clinical program or an internship, practicum or program. The action is retained in the student record. The student will be classified as undeclared until a new major is declared.

Earning Two or More Undergraduate Majors

An undergraduate student may elect to fulfill the requirements for two or more majors within the same degree credential, i.e. Bachelor of Science. When the declared major is housed between different degree credentials, refer to the Earning Two Degrees policy statement.

  • A student may not earn both a major and a minor in the same field of specialization.

  • All requirements for each major must be completed prior to the degree award. (See also earning two degrees)
